Rabbi Laurie Green

Rabbi Laurie Green comes to Temple B’nai Brith from Cincinnati, Ohio, where she led a successful transition as their Interim Rabbi. She is specially trained for transition work by the Reform Movement and excited to bring her expertise to TBB.

Rabbi Green grew up in NJ and in the Reform Movement, hailing from a Temple Shalom. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

Rabbi Green was ordained by Hebrew Union College in 2007, where she won the Phyllis S. Silverstein Memorial Prize for her pro-labor community organizing. She has a background in advocacy and community organizing.
Since ordination, Rabbi Green has served as Rabbi/Educator in Aspen, CO, Associate Rabbi in Buffalo, NY, and Solo Rabbiin Washington, D.C., where she grew the synagogue by almost 25%. She especially loves teaching, pastoral care and social justice work.

Rabbi Green did her first unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at NY Presbyterian Hospital in 2010. She expanded her pastoral training in Rockville, Maryland under supervision at the Hebrew Home of Greater DC and while working as a hospice chaplain.

Rabbi Green started teaching Hebrew in high school and she hasn’t stopped ever since. For the last 30 years, she has served in Jewish education, formal and informal, as a teacher, principal, counselor, advisor and consultant. She especially loves developing curriculum.

Passionate about recovery, inclusion and feminism, she is especially proud of her work bringing Marriage Equality to New York State, using an original strategy to sway the vote of a key State Senator. She was also a 2016 Global Justice Fellow with the American Jewish World Service, the world’s leading Jewish organization doing development work around the world in almost 30 different countries. Most recently she volunteered on the Youth Justice Task Force of Jews United for Justice in Maryland.

Rabbi Green has published liturgy, as well as divrei torah and academic articles for peer review professional journals. She is perhaps proudest of her role in creating the second edition of Shavat Vayinafash, a trans-inclusive, multiethnic, creative and feminist siddur.

When not Rabbi-ing or parenting, she can be found swimming, enjoying the outdoors, watching sci-fi, and reading historical fiction for her book club.
Rabbi Green and her wife, Mira, have two children and three dogs. August, age 16, can’t wait to go hiking in the Poconos, and Solveig, age 9, will happily perform for you.

They are all big Orioles fans! Though she grew up as a Mets fan, Rabbi Green promised to cheer for the Penguins, Railriders, Yankees, Phillies and Penn State!

Please reach out to her at the Temple by email: RabbiLgreen@tbbwb.com or by calling 570-287-9606.
